GENERAL BEARING CORPORATION'S FIRST INTERNATIONAL MANAGERS MEETING was held at its West Nyack headquarters on August 31 and September 1. On hand for the informative two-day gathering were the senior representatives of GBC's four major Chinese joint venture companies and the management staff of GBC's home office.
The meeting was kicked off by Mr. Li Lu Ming, President of Shanghai General Bearing Company (SGBC). The cornerstone of GBC's China operations, SGBC was established in 1988, and was among the first Sino-American joint ventures to be formed in China. Combining GBC's manufacturing equipment with Chinese materials and manpower proved to be a winning formula for the production of tapered roller bearings. As the venture approaches its 10th year, it is the only bearing company in China approved as a supplier to Shanghai Volkswagen, FAG, and SKF. The operation, which received ISO-9002 certification in 1996, supplies GBC with tapered roller bearings for various applications.
Wafangdian General Bearing Company (WGBC) was established in 1997 as a joint venture between GBC and Wafangdian Bearing Company. WGBC is proving to be a capable and reliable producer of traction motor bearings, and journal box components, for the U.S. market. Mr. Ni Ren-Shan, Vice President of WGBC, expressed his enthusiasm about the venture's new capability to produce automotive rear wheel bearings for the U.S. market on equipment relocated from New Departure-Hyatt's Bristol plant.
Mr. Fan Shi Shen, President of Shanghai Pudong General Bearing Company (SPGBC), was proud to announce the company's successful bid for ISO-9002 certification. Established in 1996, SPGBC specializes in the production of metric and inch ball bearings, stamped ball transfer units, and precision special bearings. With exports to the U.S., Japan and Indonesia, SPGBC is on track to set its third consecutive annual sales record in 1998.
General Bearing's newest joint venture, Ningbo General Bearing Company (NGBC), was represented by Mr. Rong Wei Jun, NGBC President. NGBC, a 100,000 square foot, state-of-the-art production facility, recently enjoyed its red-carpet opening ceremony. Among the attendees were over 100 Chinese dignitaries, GBC managers, and representatives from Ford Motor Company. Ford receives the majority of the plant's production at this time.
Mr. Rong's presentation featured a guided video tour of the NGBC facility. The factory was built to be a world-class producer of high-quality bearings and components with its primary mission being the production of ball bearings and tapered roller bearings for the U.S. automotive industry.
Among other features, the new facility is equipped with automatic, computer-controlled production lines. It also boasts new, automatic grinding and assembly lines, coolant transfer lines for the remote cleaning of all machine cutting-fluids, plus centralized water, gas, and compressed-air access throughout the three-building plant. Equipment is all new, and spotlessly maintained by a team of factory technicians trained in Japan.
Already certified under ISO-9000 standards, NGBC is now preparing for certification under the more stringent QS-9000 standards. Established in November 1997, NGBC has the capacity to produce 8 million tapered roller bearings and 4 million ball bearings annually.
At the conclusion of the meeting in West Nyack, the joint venture representatives and a key GBC management delegation departed for Detroit for meetings with major automakers.
