Howie Foote: Gone Fishin'

Howie Foote, GBC's
National Sales Manager

Howland "Howie" S. Foote, our genial National Sales Manager and a GBC employee for more than 9 years, retired August 2nd, the better to continue his fabled exploits as a fisherman.

After graduating from the University of Connecticut with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1951, Howie was a commissioned officer (Lieutenant, Junior Grade) in the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. He spent two years on the sea doing this intriguing work, meanwhile developing a love for the sea that has lead to his fame as an outstanding fisherman.

now in the field, there hasn't been a single warranty return

Having completed his service commitment, Howie went to work for another "General," General Motors, where he spent 34 years. He served in a spectrum of capacities including positions in engineering, manufacturing, quality control and sales in Ohio, Connecticut and Arizona. Toward the end of his General Motors service, Howie was Manager of Quality Control at GM's New Departure-Hyatt Division. Not coincidentally, Howie's sales efforts in recent years centered around General Bearing's Hyatt Division. Upon retiring from GM, Howie founded Tri-Service, Inc., a bearing industry quality control consulting firm. General Bearing was one of his clients, which led to his joining the General Bearing team.

Howie first served the company in 1987 as an outside consultant, designing the quality control system for which we are noted. He was retained as a full-time General Bearing employee to implement the new system and served in several GBC capacities before becoming Sales Manager in 1990.

His achievements were impressive. Among them, the introduction of large, tapered roller bearings to the tractor-trailer market. In just a few years the roster of customers for this product has grown to include 25 of the leading trailer manufacturers in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

With five million of these bearings now in the field, there hasn't been a single warranty return attributable to a quality problem. And not a single promised delivery date has been missed.

Howie resides in nearby River Vale, NJ with his wife, Sally Jo. The couple has seven children, and now enjoy eight lively grandchildren. Present retirement plans call for the Footes to move to Ohio to be near some of these grandchildren while they take their time deciding on a more permanent residence "somewhere near salt water." There's a good fishing boat somewhere in this future. Extensive travel abroad is also contemplated.

Immediately following his official retirement from General Bearing in August, Howie Foote performed still another valuable service for the company. His depth of knowledge and experience in the quality control area were enlisted to assist in registration for the valuable QS-9000 and ISO 9000 certifications. That's just one more of the many important contributions Howie Foote has made to GBC over the years. We all will certainly miss him and his alleged bountiful catches of bluefish.
