Quality Training to Go...To China

On August 27th, 1996 we welcomed a group of engineers and technicians from our joint venture production plant, Wafangdian General Bearing Corporation, located in Wafangdian, China. The training project was initiated by Seymour Gussack, Chairman of the Board of General Bearing Corporation. Its goal: providing the group with thorough training in General's quality assurance and manufacturing systems so that they might take the knowledge back with them to our joint venture. A program including both classroom and hands-on training was developed specifically for the group.

Chinese engineers and technicians shown with our own Joe Hoo, Jun Wan, Pete Wallack, Sales Mgr. Railroad Bearings, Ed Lynch, Plant Mgr. and Bob Linkus, Mfg. Engineer.

Among the trainees were: Wan Ling Jin, former Chief Engineer; Kai Sun, Vice President of Wafangdian General Bearing Corporation; Shuang Hong Zhong, Electric Equipment Specialist; Yong Fu Sun, Manager of Machinery; Yong Kui He, Manager of Machine Maintenance; Li Fang Wei, Manager of Technology, Roller Production; Yong De Dai, Sr. Engineer Numeric Control; Zhong Chao Ma, Technician; and Yan Tao Wang, Metallurgist.
Our very own Jun Wan, Project Engineer, was tour guide, host and translator for the group. Jun described the experience as "most educational" and said that he especially enjoyed exchanging ideas with the trainees.

After a brief orientation, the visitors received training on safety, quality, product, preventative machine maintenance, testing of anti-friction bearings for life expectancy, engineering fundamentals, and design principles. The practical portion of the training ran the spectrum from primary grinding to final assembly with an emphasis on quality, bearing handling and equipment maintenance. Each lesson was conducted by the staff member of General Bearing most knowledgeable in that particular subject.

The Wafangdian group was impressed with the extensiveness of the training provided to them. They expressed their appreciation for the practical and functional nature of the instruction they received. They further expressed their appreciation for the attention of Joseph Hoo, Vice President China Affairs/ Advanced Technology.

The group thanked Gene Passariello, Vice President of Manufacturing, for choosing tradition over originality in arranging a daily lunch delivery from a local Chinese restaurant.

The trainees left quite a favorable impression on the GBC staff as well. Paul Biondi, our Quality Assurance Manager, described the group as interested and attentive. Sam Latkovic, Project Engineer, made note of their enthusiasm for our overall quality assurance program. Bill Kurtz, Vice President of Technical Services, was quick to point out that the trainees showed an enormous appreciation for techniques and equipment utilized in quality and engineering design here at GBC. He went on to say that this project would lead to enhanced conformance to GBC's stringent quality assurance requirements.

Seymour Gussack was so pleased with the success of the project that he has issued a directive replacing GBC's existing training programs for technical personnel with the new Wafangdian program.
